Breast Reduction for Women and Men

Plastic Surgeons Serving McLean, Tysons Corner, Nearby Fairfax County, Northern Virginia, Washington DC & Maryland

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure to reduce the size of women’s breasts. In addition to physical pain and other symptoms, large breasts may also draw unwanted attention. This can affect a woman’s self-esteem and make her uncomfortable with her appearance. This procedure removes fat and glandular tissue from the breast while tightening skin to produce smaller breasts that are more comfortable and in better proportion to the rest of the body.

Breast reduction surgery can improve neck and back pain, soreness and physical limitations due to overly large, heavy breasts. As two of the few expertly-trained women plastic surgeons in Virginia, Dr. Gloria Duda and Dr. Erica Anderson understands the significance of feeling confident in your breast appearance and the importance of achieving results that are balanced, and natural-looking.

Your Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes breast skin, fat and glandular tissue resulting in smaller, lighter, firmer breasts with reduction in areola size and elevated position of the nipple.

As with breast lifts, the incisions and scar location on the breast are determined by how much tissue needs to be removed to alleviate your symptoms and the position of the nipple. The most common incisions are around the areola and a vertical short scar. In patients who require removal of significant amounts skin and tissue, an anchor-shaped incision around the areola straight down and then in the crease under the breast is performed. The excess fat, glandular tissue and skin are removed, the breast reshaped, and the areola and nipple are repositioned. Liposuction is sometimes used to remove any excess fat around the armpit.

Male Breast Reduction – Gynecomastia Surgery

Breast reduction surgery for men removes the unwanted excess breast, a condition called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts. Gynecomastia can cause extreme self-consciousness, restricting activities such as going to the beach or a swimming pool, or embarrassment in removing their shirt while at the beach or swimming pool. To correct this condition, excess breast tissue is removed through the use of surgical excision, liposuction, or both.

Gynecomastia occurs in about 70% of pubescent boys and this usually resolves without treatment. Sometimes this condition does not correct itself and will require a surgical procedure to remove the excess breast tissue. In adults, gynecomastia can be associated with obesity, hormone shifts, with certain medications (steroids, anti-anxiety drugs, antibiotics, AIDS treatment drugs, tricyclic antidepressants), marijuana use and excessive alcohol use.
